American Shorin-ryu Karate Association black belt and outstanding BJJ competitor Tom Rice returns home to Ohio from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, birthplace of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with two more prestigious medals from the International Master and Senior Tournament. On Friday, July 23, 2010 Tom took a 3rd Bronze medal in the heavy weight division and on Saturday, July 24th took a second place silver medal in the absolute/open division.
The ASKA is very proud of Tom Rice and what he has accomplished. We look forward to having him share some of his winning techniques at our ASKA Seminars and Clinics and also at our Budo Camp the first weekend in June 2011 at Mohican State Park in Ohio.
Tom adds these wins to his victories at the 2008 Pan Am Games where as a Blue Belt he took a silver metal in the medium heavy class division and in the absolute/open class, which is all weight classes combined another silver. In that finals match Tom’s opponent for the final matched him up against the 300 pound, 6’7” super heavy weight division champion and former USA national wrestling champion. Tom said he was thrown around like a “rag doll”, earning the silver medal a bit bloody, but never submitted to the giant.
